Friday, April 29th, 2011 by South Alabama Community Website

We’ve been pretty active on both Facebook and Twitter gathering information and finding out how people can get involved in helping those affected by recent storms in Tuscaloosa, Cullman, Jacksonville and other cities throughout west Alabama. The damage is remarkable. President Obama, Governor Bentley, and Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice have taken action to see that the towns, schools, businesses and people affected are getting the assistance they need. You’re probably asking by now, “How can I help out the victims of the tornadoes in west Alabama?”, and we’re here to share with you a list of businesses and places you can help to pass along in your own city from dropping off non-perishable goods to giving blood.

Where to help in Baldwin County:

The City of Fairhope is collecting items for Tuscaloosa and northern Alabama at the James P. Nix Center. The items will be transported by “We Care Baldwin County” lead by local residents Bobby and Lori Clark.

Alabama Moon Coming To Theaters

Wednesday, March 2nd, 2011 by South Alabama Community Website

Alabama Moon the Movie - PosterFairhope, Alabama (February 18, 2011) – “Alabama Moon,” the movie based on Alabama author Watt Key’s best-selling novel about adventure, survival and friendship, comes to the big screen beginning March 18. This action-packed, family film starring John Goodman, Clint Howard and Jimmy Bennett debuts first in Birmingham, Alabama. The film shows next in Mobile, Alabama and then opens in other Southeastern cities.

The film, produced by Alabamians Kenny McLean and Lee Faulkner, follows eleven-year-old Moon Blake (Jimmy Bennett), who has spent most of his life hiding out in the forests of Alabama with his anti-government father who clings to conspiracy theories and trusts no one. Moon’s life suddenly changes when the land is sold and his father dies. Knowing only what he learned from his father, Moon decides to follow his last instructions: make your way to Alaska where “people could still make a living off trapping.”

In the path of civilization, Moon quickly lands himself in a reform school where he meets the mean-spirited Constable Sanders (Clint Howard) and learns what friendship is all about. With the help of Mr. Wellington (John Goodman), Moon adapts and learns to survive in the outside world. “Being involved with this movie has been the experience of a lifetime,” said Lee Faulkner. “When I read Watt Key’s novel I knew it would make a perfect family film.”

“Alabama Moon’s” Alabama ties run deep. Watt Key’s novel and the movie are set in the forests of Alabama; Key, Faulkner and McLean all reside in Fairhope, a small city in Baldwin County, Alabama; and one of the actors in the film, Uriah Shelton, lived and attended school in Fairhope.

Alabama Moon is a classic kid’s film complete with adventure and survival that most of us only dream about, which is what makes it great for the entire family. The film was awarded the Dove Foundation Family Approved seal in 2010. The non-profit foundation is dedicated to advocating for families and moving Hollywood in a more family-friendly direction.

NOAA Reopens More than 5,000 Square Miles in the Gulf to Fishing Including Alabama Waters

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010 by South Alabama Community Website

Reopened fishing area (in hashmarks) on Sept. 2, 2010. Closure area may be updated daily as necessary.NOAA today reopened to commercial and recreational fishing 5,130 square miles of Gulf waters stretching from the far eastern coast of Louisiana, through Mississippi, Alabama, and the western Florida panhandle. The reopening was announced after consultation with FDA and under a re-opening protocol agreed to by NOAA, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and the Gulf states.

Trajectory models show the area is at a low risk for future exposure to oil, and most importantly, fish caught in the area and tested by NOAA experts showed no signs of contamination.

“This is a significant area of importance to fishing and tourism,” said Jane Lubchenco, Ph.D., under secretary of commerce for oceans and atmosphere and NOAA administrator. “The Gulf seafood taken from these waters is safe to eat, and today’s re-opening announcement is another signal to tourists that the northern Gulf is open for business.”

The South Alabama Community Website contacted local charter boat Captain George Pfeiffer of Action Charter Service for a comment and he had this to say:

After a long and anticipated wait, we’re finally able to go fishing again and check out our fishing holes off Orange Beach and Gulf Shores. It’s been nearly three months and a long summer since this happened. But, we’re very excited to finally be able to catch fish in local Alabama waters again. We’re ready to book, so if people would like to call us at (888) 558-3889, we’ll take them fishing!

We’re also very excited as well to see tourists continue to support our community and to see things begin to return to normal.

Ticket confusion at Wharf causes anger | Fox10tv.com

Friday, August 20th, 2010 by South Alabama Community Website

ORANGE BEACH, Alabama (WALA) – Confusion over tickets to the Hank Williams Junior concert at the Wharf turned to anger Friday morning. Many buyers were at the ticket office when it opened at 10:00 a.m. however, many were turned away empty handed.

Music fans waited in line for hours Friday morning at the Wharf Ticket Office after being told more tickets would be on sale for the Rowdy Friends Concert. However, that wasn’t the case.

Joe Bichoff wasn’t happy about it, he and his three friends wanted a total of 16 tickets.

“These are the $10 tickets she said we could get. She said she had no more, she said the CVB got them. That is just absolutely ridiculous that we were here on Wednesday told that they were out and we were told that there would be 1,700 tickets on Friday morning and they’re not,” Bichoff shouted.

Mike Foster, with the Gulf Shores Convention and Visitors Bureau, said there are 9,600 seats in the amphitheater at the Wharf, but only 3,000 of those seats will be taken up by people who actually live in Baldwin County. Foster said there is a good reason why most of the tickets were bundled into hotel room packages .

“We want people from Baton Rouge, from New Orleans and Birmingham to come and spend the night because that’s what drives this economy. If I can get you here I know you are going to spend $50 to $100 on dinner and $50 on something else and probably buy a t-shirt, and that’s all good economic growth for the whole community,” Foster explained.

Terry Ellis drove from Pensacola to get his tickets, but he drove away empty handed.

“I wasn’t looking for the discount. I wanted to pay full price and have a good time and put back in the community,” Ellis said.

If you got tickets Friday, consider yourself lucky, they are all sold out now.

The Rowdy Friends Concert featuring Hank Williams Junior and Gretchen Wilson is scheduled for September 25 at The Wharf.

Hard boom coming out of Orange Beach back bays | al.com

Thursday, August 19th, 2010 by South Alabama Community Website

ORANGE BEACH, Ala. — Hard boom in the back bays of Orange Beach will be removed, possibly starting as early as Friday, Orange Beach city staff members said today.

Boom to be removed will include that around Robinson Island and Cotton Bayou. The removal, once started, should take two days, the city said. Cotton Bayou contains the city’s only public boat launch.

The removal decision, made by Unified Command, was based on the decision that the submerged and emulsified oil found recently in back bays cannot be effectively contained by hard boom. Coast Guard officials told the city it is ready to place absorbent boom in areas where they might be needed.

For information, call email Kit Alexander at kalexander@cityoforangebeach.com or call 251-981-2610.

Tickets only for Baldwin residents | Fox10tv.com

Tuesday, August 17th, 2010 by South Alabama Community Website

ORANGE BEACH, Ala. (WALA) – Exclusive $10 tickets for The Rowdy Friends 2010 Tour are only available to Baldwin County residents.

Of the 10,000 ticketed seats available in The Wharf’s Orange Beach Amphitheater, approximately 3,000 tickets have been allocated to Baldwin County residents and Ticketmaster. The remaining portion will be distributed by Gulf Shores and Orange Beach Tourism to its accommodations partners to create packages. Any tickets not used by lodging partners will then be released on Ticketmaster’s website for the general public to purchase.

FOX10 News has asked the Gulf Shores-Orange Beach tourism department why the tickets were not made available to neighboring Mobile County and Escambia County, Florida, which were also affected by the oil spill. However, no immediate answer is available.

From 10 a.m. August 18 to 6 p.m. August 19, Baldwin County residents may purchase up to four tickets from The Wharf Store located in Shucker’s Oyster Bar, The Wharf’s box office located at the amphitheater, or from the Ticketmaster located inside the Orange Beach Publix. Tickets will be $10 each, and Baldwin County residents must present identification at the time of sale.

The concert– featuring country legend Hank Williams, Jr., Gretchen Wilson and Lee Brice – will take the stage at The Wharf’s Amphitheater on Saturday, September 25 as part of an ongoing concert series sponsored by Gulf Shores and Orange Beach Tourism. The show begins at 7 p.m.
